In Chicago, Illinois, the United States, on May 28, 1930, Frank Donald Drake was born. Richard Drake, a chemical engineer who worked for the city of Chicago, was his father. Frank’s mother, Winifred Thompson, was a University of Illinois student when she first met Frank’s father.

Frank was the couple’s oldest child, and his younger siblings Robert and Alma both went on to become economists.

Frank’s early religious experiences were not particularly positive. His parents were Baptists who led quite austere lives; their lack of joy and humour was noticeable.

Frank Drake was a prominent pioneer in the search for alien intelligence (SETI). He is one of only a few scientists whose equations have made it into popular culture enough to be printed on t-shirts and other merchandise. The Drake equation, which can be used to calculate the number of sentient civilizations in our galaxy, is what he is the best famous for.

Drake has been a major contributor to the messages that have been written and sent from Earth in the hopes that someday an alien culture may find and read them.

Along with his work on SETI, Drake was the first to chart the Milky Way galaxy and is credited with coining the term “pulsar” to describe fast rotating neutron stars.
