The nation’s capital is where he was born. He is named after NBA legend and fellow D.C. native Elgin Baylor. He graduated from Forestville High School in 1986 and afterward attended Prince George’s Community College in Largo, Maryland, where he obtained an associate’s degree in paralegal studies. The new name of Forestville High School is Forestville Military Academy.

The popular 90s R&B group Jodeci member Donald “DeVante Swing” DeGrate formed the record label and music collective Swing Mob, where Ginuwine started his career. There, he met the rapper Melissa “Missy” Elliott, the musician Stephen “Static Major” Garrett, and the producer Timothy “Timbaland” Mosley, who would go on to work with him frequently during the 1990s.

Ginuwine’s initial role was in the movie You Got Served in 2004. Marques Houston, an R&B musician, was eventually cast in his place. One of the main characters in the film still goes by Ginuwine’s real name, “Elgin,” according to the script’s author.
