Joseph Jeffrey Hazelwood was an American seaman who lived from September 24, 1946, until about July 22, 2022. When the Exxon Valdez leaked oil in 1989, he was the ship’s captain.

He was cleared of the charge that his intoxication was what caused the catastrophe in 1990 after witnesses testified that he was sober at the time of the accident. Hazelwood received a $50,000 fine and was ordered to perform 1,000 hours of community service after being found guilty of a less serious charge—negligent discharge of oil.

Hazelwood was born in Hawkinsville, Georgia, and was raised in Huntington, Long Island, New York. Joseph, his father, was a torpedo bomber pilot for the US Marine Corps before transitioning to commercial aviation. His mother, Margaret, was born in Georgia.

Hazelwood, their son, was the couple’s first child. He wed Suzanne in 1969, and the two had a daughter they named Alison (born 1975).
Hazelwood had a 138 IQ according to testing, and she graduated from Huntington High School in 1964. In his teenage years, he was a dedicated Sea Scout and sailor. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in maritime transportation from the State University of New York’s Maritime College in May 1968.

The skipper of the vessel Exxon Valdez, Joseph Hazelwood, has gone away. In March 1989, the Exxon Valdez grounded on a rock in Alaska’s Prince William Sound, causing one of the worst environmental disasters in American history and spewing at least 10.8 million gallons of crude oil. He was 75.

The death was confirmed on Friday by his nephew Sam Hazelwood, who claimed that his uncle had been suffering the combined effects of Covid-19 and cancer. He went on to add that he didn’t know exactly when or where his uncle had passed away. Mr Hazelwood lived in Huntington, New York, which was part of Long Island.
