Marco Antonio Rubio was born in Miami, Florida as the second son and third child of Mario Rubio Reina and Oriales (née Garcia) Rubio. His parents were Cubans who arrived in the country in 1956, two and a half years before Fidel Castro came to power following the Cuban Revolution and under the rule of Fulgencio Batista, making him a Cubian-American.
After Castro’s coup, his mother visited Cuba at least four more times, including once in 1961 for a whole month. Rubio’s parents petitioned for citizenship and were naturalized in 1975, although neither of them was a citizen of the United States at the time of Rubio’s birth. Rubio’s relatives have received refugee admission to the United States.
Marco is currently serving as the senior US senator from Florida. He has that position since 2011.
