Grissom was born in Atlanta, Georgia, the second youngest of Marion and Julia Grissom’s sixteen children. Grissom was one of the fifteen kids who lived past infancy. His father built the home where he was raised from the ground up in Red Oak, Georgia while working on the assembly line at the Ford plant’s Atlanta Assembly. Early in his life, Grissom lacked the funds to play organized baseball. Grissom threw a rock from a large distance at a police officer’s Cadillac when he was between the ages of 8 and 10. Because of the impressive throw, the officer promised not to seek charges against Grissom if he later joined his minor baseball team.
