Paul Coker Jr., an American cartoonist, passed away on July 23, 2022. (He was born on March 5, 1929.) In addition to creating characters for Rankin-Bass TV series, commercials, and other projects, he worked in a range of media, including Mad.

Coker, who was born in Lawrence, Kansas, attended the University of Kansas to study painting and drawing before accepting a job making greeting cards for Hallmark in the 1950s.

 

He intended to remain here for some time. Coker made his debut in Mad in 1961; since then, he has illustrated more than 375 articles for publication.

 

Coker worked as a production designer on more than a dozen Rankin/Bass specials and shorts starting in 1967. Don Edwing and Coker worked together to create the “Lancelot” and “Horace and Buggy” comic strips.
