RSV, also known as the respiratory syncytial virus, is a common respiratory virus that often causes mild, cold-like symptoms. RSV can be serious, especially for young children and elderly individuals, although the majority of people recover within a week or two. Of children under the age of one, RSV is the most frequent cause of bronchiolitis (inflammation of the tiny airways in the lung) and pneumonia (lung infection) in the United States.
What Is RSV In Babies?
The respiratory syncytial virus causes lung and respiratory tract infections (RSV). Since the virus is so common, most children have it by the time they turn two. The respiratory syncytial (sin-SISH-ul) virus can also infect adults.
In adults and older, healthy children, RSV symptoms are typically mild and mimic the common cold. Taking care of oneself usually suffices to alleviate any discomfort.
RSV can result in a serious infection in some individuals, including infants aged 12 months or less (newborns), particularly preterm infants, older adults, those with heart and lung illness, as well as those with weakened immune systems (immunocompromised).
