Kelly and Jordan Hicks were teammates at West Chester, Ohio’s Lakota West High School. As a junior, he was a first-team all-conference and all-city selection on the offensive line. In the final game of his senior season, against rival Lakota East, he tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), yet he was still selected for the Division I All-Ohio the third team.

Ryan was selected, however, he was unable to play in the Under Armour All-America Game because of a recent knee injury.

Kelly was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft (18th overall). The Colts drafted him with the intention of having him serve as “the first reliable centre for the team since Jeff Saturday.” He was Alabama’s first first-round selection on the inside of the offensive line since Chance Warmack was selected in 2013.

The Indianapolis Colts signed Kelly on May 4, 2016, to a four-year, $10.45 million contract with a fully guaranteed $5.80 signing bonus. He started each of the 16 games at centre during his first season.
