Okoye was born in Düsseldorf, Germany, to a Nigerian Igbo father and a German mother. Both of Okoye’s parents are of German descent.

In the summer of 2017, he made the decision to join the young team of Fortuna Düsseldorf after seven years of playing for the youth squad of Bayer Leverkusen, where he had been a member since 2009.

After coming in as a substitute for the injured Max Schijns in the 43rd minute of Fortuna Düsseldorf II’s game against Wuppertaler SV on October 14, 2017, he made his first appearance in a professional game in the Regionalliga West for Fortuna Düsseldorf II.
