For many years, the English monarchy had a great deal of power, but there have been countless attempts throughout history to weaken that rule and give in to noble demands.
The Magna Carta, famously signed by King John in 1215, acknowledged that the monarchy did have some limitations on its power but, more importantly, stated that the crown could not impose taxes without the consent of a council of feudal lords and religious leaders.
These wealthy and powerful individuals eventually formed the Parliament, which gradually increased its power as the English people began to look to it for assistance with their issues and send representatives to petition it on their behalf.
