Tito Puente was renowned for fusing Latin and jazz sounds, emphasizing percussion, and embracing the music with dancing and excitement when performing. At the Palladium Ballroom, where the Tito Puente Orchestra drew large crowds and promoted mambo, his band established a recurring presence.

He worked with many other well-known artists such as the likes of Celia Cruz, and over the years earned the title “El Rey,” which means the king of mambo music. In the 1950s, Puente started recording for RCA Victor. Over the ensuing decades, he kept making records, working with others, and giving performances. He portrayed himself in the film Mambo Kings in the 1990s, which contributed to a resurgence of interest in his music. Before his death, he was still very much active and often seen preforming.

Through his Tito Puente Orchestra, Puente produced 188 albums. His first soundtrack, Ran Kan Kan, is featured in today’s Google Doodle.
