Julia Carolyn Child (August 15, 1912 – August 13, 2004) was a cooking instructor, author, and television personality from the United States.

She is credited with popularizing French cuisine in the United States with her first cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and subsequent television shows, the most notable of which was The French Chef, which debuted in 1963.

From fourth to ninth grade, the child attended Polytechnic School in Pasadena, California. The child was sent to the Katherine Branson School in Ross, California, which was a boarding school at the time. The child, who stands six feet two inches (1.88 m) tall, was a tennis, golf, and basketball player as a child.

The child also participated in sports while attending Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in history in 1934. She intended to become a novelist or a magazine writer when she graduated.

Following her graduation from college, Child relocated to New York City, where she worked briefly as a copywriter for the advertising department of W. & J. Sloane. In fact, she still aspired to be a novelist.
