She is one of four children, along with two sisters, Elizabeth and Susannah, and a brother named Andrew. Coolidge studied at Emerson College in Boston and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City while attending Norwell High School and the Cambridge School of Weston. In New York, Sandra Bullock, who would later win an Oscar, worked in a restaurant with Coolidge as a waiter. Coolidge attended orchestra camp for three summers as a child and played the clarinet.

Coolidge intended to be a dramatic actress like Meryl Streep in college, but she ended up being a humorous character actress.
