Crowley was a precocious child, and he showed an early interest in esoteric subjects, particularly in the writings of Eliphas Levi and the Golden Dawn.
After attending Trinity College, Cambridge, Crowley traveled extensively throughout the world, studying various spiritual and mystical traditions. In 1898, he joined the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a secret society dedicated to the study and practice of the occult.
Crowley quickly rose through the ranks of the Golden Dawn, but his increasingly radical views and unorthodox practices eventually led to his expulsion from the order in 1900. Undeterred, he continued to study and experiment with different forms of magic and spiritual practice.
