On Sunday afternoon, Denver’s home-built, two-seat Long-EZ plane crashed into a marine preserve that was teeming with seals and sea otters.

Before getting approval from the Monterey Airport to take the plane for a test spin along the coast, veteran pilot Denver had practiced three touch-and-go landings, in which he swooped down to the runway and then pulled back up.

According to National Transportation Safety Board investigator George Petterson, his last words were, “Do you have it now?” Denver’s signal disappeared shortly after attempts to radio him failed, according to FBI investigators.
