Miller debuted in the Pittsburgh hip-hop scene in 2007, at the age of fifteen. Miller’s music was widely regarded as “frat rap” early in his career, with lyrics focusing on partying, smoking marijuana, and lusting after fame, money, and women. Following Blue Slide Park’s mixed critical reception, Miller began to take a more expressive and experimental approach to his subsequent releases.
Miller cited Big L, Lauryn Hill, Beastie Boys, Outkast, and A Tribe Called Quest as influences. He had a close relationship with fellow Pittsburgh rapper Wiz Khalifa, he said “Wiz has been like a big brother to me in this music thing so far. Our bond extends beyond music. He’s just my pal, whether I’m making music or not.” He has also mentioned Eminem as an influence, saying, “I didn’t really understand Em’s genius until I was like 15, 16.”
Miller’s estate began approving posthumous music releases in June 2019, beginning with “Time” by Free Nationals and Kali Uchis and “That’s Life” by 88-Keys and Sia. Miller’s family announced his first posthumous album, Circles, on January 8, 2020, and it was released later that month on January 17. Miller had been working on the album prior to his death as a follow-up to Swimming. Jon Brion, who worked with Miller on both albums, finished the production. Circles debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, selling 164,000 units in its first week, his best week for an album. Its lead single, “Good News,” became his most successful single as a solo artist, peaking at number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100.
