Opportunity was a rover that was launched to Mars in the year 2003. It was the second of the two rovers launched in 2003 to land on Mars and begin traversing the Red Planet. The aim was for the Opportunity rover to search for signs of ancient water. The Opportunity rover then explored the Martian terrain for closer to 15 years. The Opportunity far outlasted the planned 90-day mission for her.

After the rover landed on Mars in the year 2004, Opportunity made a number of discoveries about the Red Planet which included dramatic evidence that long ago at least one area of Mars stayed wet for an extended period and that conditions could have been suitable for sustaining microbial life. This discovery among other amazing ones were made by the rover.

The Opportunity rover then stopped communicating with Earth when a severe Mars-wide dust storm blanketed Opportunity’s location in June 2018. There were more than a thousand commands issued to restore contact but the efforts proved futile. The engineers in the Mission Control at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) made their final attempt to revive Opportunity in the space on Tuesday, February 13, 2019 and it still did not work. Later the solar-powered rover’s final communication was received June 10 2019.
