Davido released “Dami Duro,” the second single from his debut studio album Omo Baba Olowo, in 2012 and went on to win the Next Rated Award at The Headies (2012). David released a succession of successful singles between 2013 and 2015, and in January 2016, he agreed to a record deal with Sony Music.
David subsequently established the record company Davido Music Worldwide (DMW), which has signed artists like Mayorkun, Liya, Peruzzi, and Dremo. Davido and Sony’s RCA Records inked a record deal in July 2016.
The 2017 MOBO Awards awarded Davido Best African Act. On February 17th, 2017, he issued “If.” Davido’s track was ghostwritten for Tekno, who also produced it. The Recording Industry of South Africa gave the song a diamond certification, meaning 200,000 units were shipped.
At the 2018 Headies, “If” took home the awards for Best Pop Single and Song of the Year. As a “slow burner” with an “unfussy beat that sounds hollowed out and isn’t overloaded with instrumentation,” Sabo Kpade described the song in a review for OkayAfrica.
Director Q and Tunde Babalola worked together to develop the “If” music video, which was shot in London.
