Maryam Guèbrou, also known as Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou, was a pioneering Ethiopian pianist, composer, and also nun. She was born on December 12, 1923, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to a family of aristocrats. Her father was a prominent judge and her mother was an accomplished pianist.
Maryam Guèbrou started playing the piano at the age of six, and by the time she was 14 years, she was already performing in public. She received her early musical education from Italian nuns and later continued her studies in Switzerland, where she attended the Geneva Conservatory of Music.
After returning to Ethiopia in 1940, Guèbrou continued to perform and compose music, drawing inspiration from both Ethiopian traditional music and Western classical music. She also became a nun in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and spent many years living in a monastery. Despite her talents, Guèbrou remained relatively unknown outside of Ethiopia for most of her life. It was until in 2000, when a French record label reissued some of her recordings, that her music became popular.
