Lata was the eldest of five siblings and she is regarded by many as one of India’s greatest and most influential vocalists. Her eight-decade career in the Indian music industry earned her titles like “Queen of Melody,” “Nightingale of India,” and “Voice of the Millennium.”
Lata mostly sang in Marathi, Hindi, and Bengali, however, she also recorded songs in more than 36 different Indian languages and a few other languages, she spoke international languages which include; English, Indonesian, Russian, Dutch, Nepali, and Swahili. Throughout her career, she was given numerous distinctions and awards. She was given the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989 by the Indian government. She received the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 2001 in recognition of her contributions to the country; she is only the second female singer to do so after M. S. Subbulakshmi. Also In 2007, she received the highest civilian honour bestowed by France, the Officer of the National Order of the Legion of Honor.
