Mookie” Betts, a professional baseball right fielder was born on October 7, 1992. Betts was selected by the Boston Red Sox as a second baseman with the 172nd overall choice in the fifth round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft. Following some lengthy talks, Betts decided to back out of his enrollment at the University of Tennessee and instead signed a $750,000 deal with the Red Sox organization.

In 2011, Betts appeared in one game for the rookie Gulf Coast League’s GCL Red Sox and there he recorded two hits in four at-bats and played 71 games for the short-season Lowell Spinners of the New York-Penn League in 2012, batting.267 with 20 base steals. He usually played shortstop but was more at ease at second base.

In the Low A South Atlantic League, Betts began the 2013 season with the Greenville Drive. Betts was once again chosen to play in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game despite only appearing in 76 games and batting.296 with a 19-game hitting streak.
