Shakira Mebarak Ripoll was born in Barranquilla, Colombia, on February 2, 1977. She has a Lebanese father and a Colombian mother and embraces both her Latino and Arabic background in her songs. Shakira penned her first song when she was eight years old and secured her first record contract when she was thirteen.

Shakira took over the production of her third album after her previous two failed. Pies Descalzos, which translates to “bare feet,” was released in 1996 and sold over 3 million copies. The album showcased her signature sound, a fusion of Latin, rock, and Arabic musical elements.
Her follow-up single, Dónde Están Los Ladrones? (1998), which translates as “Where are the thieves?” hit the top of Billboard’s Latin charts. Shakira earned her first Grammy Award for Shakira: MTV Unplugged not long after (2000).
