David Crosby is the second child of Oscar-winning cinematographer Floyd Crosby and Macy’s salesperson Aliph Van Cortlandt Whitehead. He was born in Los Angeles, California. Crosby had previous Wall Street experience.

After completing a brief drama course, Crosby left Santa Barbara City College to pursue a career in music. He performed in Greenwich Village and Chicago with the vocalist Terry Callier, but they were unable to sign a record deal. Crosby went to Crane Country Day School, Laguna Blanca School, and the University Elementary School in Los Angeles. He attended Santa Barbara City College briefly to study drama before withdrawing to pursue a career in music.

Among Crosby’s written or co-written songs are: Some examples include Lady Friend, Everybody’s Been Burned, Why, Eight Miles High, Guinnevere, Wooden Ships, Shadow Captain, and In My Dreams.

Crosby is well-known for using jazz influences and alternative guitar tunings. He was honored with two inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: twice—once for his work with CSN and once for the Byrds.
