“Cus” D’Amato was an Italian-American boxing manager and trainer who oversaw the careers of Mike Tyson, Floyd Patterson, and José Torres, all of whom were later elected into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. He was born on January 17, 1908. He kicked the bucket on November 4, 1985.

He competed as a featherweight and lightweight for a short time in amateur boxing, but due to an eye injury he sustained in a street fight, he was unable to obtain a professional license.

Teddy Atlas and Kevin Rooney are two successful boxing coaches who received instruction from D’Amato. He was a supporter of the peek-a-boo boxing technique, in which the boxer draws his arms tightly against his chest while holding his gloves near to his face. This technique was condemned by some because they thought it prevented an effective attack from being launched from it.
