After taking part in a peaceful assembly that saw the raising of the Morning Star flag, a Papuan insignia, Karma, a well-known advocate for the rights of Indonesia’s Papuan people, was taken into custody on December 1, 2004.

A false report that two of Filep Karma’s cousins from Biak were actually his uncles Sam and Jan Pieter Karma, colonels for OPM, led Indonesian soldiers to raid Filep Karma’s home at night while he was a little boy and pillage the family’s possessions.

The day before the raid, he received a visit from Fritz Karma, a relative who was a TNI informant and a member of the Polri, giving him cause to think that he was the informant. Karma was sentenced to 15 years in prison for hoisting a flag.
