Abourezk, South Dakota’s lone senator and representative in the U.S. House of Representatives, typified the Prairie Populist school of Democratic politics in the 1970s. With passion and humour, Abourezk stood up for people he believed to be the downtrodden, such as farmers, consumers, and Native Americans.

The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs’ first chairman, Abourezk, was successful in advancing the creation of the American Indian Policy Reform Commission.

As a result, the government’s treatment of American Indian tribes was closely scrutinized, and the Indian Child Welfare Act, the American Indian Religious Freedom Act, and the Indian Self-Determination and Education Aid Act were all approved. The alarming rate at which Native American children were removed from their homes and put with White families was intended to be slowed by a crucial piece of legislation.
