Bernard Kalb is a journalist, moderator, media critic, educator, and author who was born in the United States on February 4, 1922.
He was a native New Yorker who spent more than three decades working as a foreign affairs reporter for CBS News, NBC News, and The New York Times. For about half of that time, he was based abroad, in locations including Indonesia, Hong Kong, Paris, and Saigon.
The Council on Foreign Relations awarded Kalb a fellowship near the end of his time with the Times, and he took a year off from working there after receiving it. He also won an Overseas Press Club Award for a 1968 Vietcong documentary.
He frequently accompanied his younger brother, the writer Marvin Kalb, on official missions, and the two of them eventually collaborated on a biography of Henry Kissinger. The two brothers also worked together on the 1975 novel The Last Ambassador, which details Saigon’s fall.
In 1984, Kalb was named the State Department’s spokesperson and assistant secretary of state for public affairs. The State Department had never before chosen a reporter as its spokesperson.
Two years later, Kalb resigned from his position in protest of what he called “the purported disinformation effort” launched by the Reagan administration against Libyan Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi.
