Bruce Sutter was an American pitcher who competed in Major League Baseball (MLB) for a total of 12 seasons, beginning in 1976 and ending in 1988. He was born on January 8, 1953, and passed away on October 13, 2022.
During the latter half of the 1970s and the early 1980s, he was widely regarded as one of the game’s top relievers. It was his split-finger fastball that made him famous.
Sutter won the World Series in 1982 and was a member of the All-Star team six times. At the time of his retirement, he had 300 saves, which placed him third all-time in Major League Baseball saves.
In 1979, the National League (NL) voted Sutter the greatest pitcher in the league, and as a result, he was awarded the NL Rolaids Relief Man Award four times. In the whole history of the NL, he is the only pitcher to have ever led the league in saves on five separate occasions (1979–1982, 1984).
