His father was the legendary African-American chess player Emory Tate. His mother worked as an assistant to a waiter. At age five, Tate began teaching himself how to play chess.
Tate started his boxing and martial arts training in 2005. Tate was classified as the seventh-best light-heavyweight kickboxer in the UK by the International Sport Kickboxing Association in November 2008. (ISKA). In Derby, England, he took home the British ISKA Full Contact Cruiserweight title. In Europe, he was the best in his division.
