Carnegie spent the majority of his boyhood on his family’s farm near Maryville. After graduating from high school, he moved to Missouri to attend the State Teachers College in Warrensburg. After graduating, he relocated to New York City, where he began working as a salesperson and eventually founded his own sales training firm.

Carnegie married Lucy Ford in 1912, and the pair moved into a modest apartment in New York City. Carnegie continued to work and write after the family relocated to a larger apartment in the city. Carnegie’s first book, Public Speaking: A Practical Course for Business Men, was published in 1920 and became a best-seller, establishing him as a prominent authority on public speaking.

Throughout his life, Dale Carnegie lived in several locations, including Missouri, New York City, and Beverly Hills, California. However, he is most closely linked with New York City, where he spent the majority of his career and where many of his most famous works were written and published.
