Ferdinand was raised in Peckham after being born at King’s College Hospital in Camberwell. Julian Ferdinand, an Afro-Saint Lucian, and Janice Lavender, an Irishwoman, are the parents of Ferdinand.

Ferdinand played frequently for youth teams, and while at Eltham Town, he started out as an offensive midfielder, club scouts quickly noticed that the young player had the physical tools to become a center-back.

The young footballer was in high demand from teams, and while still developing, he trained with Charlton Athletic, Chelsea, Millwall, and Queens Park Rangers.

Being constantly intrigued, Ferdinand even traveled to Middlesbrough’s training facility in the north, spending a significant portion of his school breaks in a bedsit just to be there.

But West Ham United of London would become his football team of choice, and in 1992 he joined their youth program.

In January 1994, Ferdinand signed his first Youth Training Scheme contract and joined youngsters like Frank Lampard in the academy.

In addition to his success at the club level, Ferdinand also started playing internationally when, at the age of 16, he joined the England youth team squad to compete in their age group’s UEFA European Championship. This was his first exposure to international competition.
