Sofia Costanza Brigida Villani Scicolone was born in the Clinica Regina Margherita in Rome, Italy, the daughter of building engineer of noble ancestry Riccardo Scicolone (1907-1976) and Romilda Villani (1910-1991). The American Film Institute named her one of the best female stars of Classical Hollywood cinema. One of the few notable Golden Age Hollywood film stars still alive as of 2022, Loren is the only person on the AFI’s list who is still alive.
In 1950, Loren began her film career at the age of sixteen after being persuaded to enrol in acting classes after placing second in a beauty contest.
