Cynthia Lennon (born Powell, 10 September 1939 – 1 April 2015) was John Lennon’s first wife and the mother of Julian Lennon. She attended Liverpool College of Art, where Lennon was also a student after being born in Blackpool and raised in Hoylake on the Wirral Peninsula. Powell and Lennon began dating after meeting in a calligraphy class.

Powell rented his bedroom at 251 Menlove Avenue in the Liverpool neighbourhood of Woolton from his aunt and legal guardian, Mimi Smith when Lennon was performing with the Beatles in Hamburg. Powell and Lennon married in August 1962 after Powell became pregnant, and the couple lived at Kenwood in Weybridge from 1964 to 1968, where she kept house and participated in a London-based social life with Lennon. In 1968, Lennon abandoned her for Japanese artist Yoko Ono, resulting in the couple’s divorce being granted formally in November 1968 on the grounds of adultery.

Where is Cynthia Lennon now?

Powell has three more marriages. She released a memoir, A Twist of Lennon, in 1978, and more intimate biography, John, in 2005. She hosted multiple auctions of items related to her life with Lennon over the years. In her final years, she settled in Calvià, Mallorca, where she died in 2015.
