Music critics praise his compositions for their avant-garde forms and introspective, enigmatic lyrics. Among other honors, Ocean has received two Grammy Awards and a Brit Award for International Male Solo Artist, and his two studio albums have been named to Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time (2020).
Before joining the hip hop collective Odd Future in 2010, Ocean worked as a ghostwriter. The following year, he released Nostalgia, Ultra, his first mixtape, and signed a recording contract with Def Jam Recordings. Channel Orange (2012), his first studio album, blended R&B and soul genres.
Channel Orange was nominated for Album of the Year and won Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 2013 Grammy Awards; one of its tracks, “Thinkin Bout You,” was nominated for Record of the Year.
