Following a difficult upbringing, Foreman decided to try amateur boxing and took home the gold in the heavyweight division in the 1968 Summer Olympics. Foreman turned professional the next year, and in 1973, after stunning the previously unbeaten Joe Frazier in the second round, he captured the heavyweight world championship. Before losing his first fight as a professional to Muhammad Ali in the renowned Rumble in the Jungle in 1974, he successfully defended the belt twice. After losing to Jimmy Young in 1977, Foreman decided to retire because he was unable to win another title opportunity.
Foreman became ordained as a Christian preacher after experiencing what he described as a religious experience. Ten years later, he made a comeback announcement. In 1994, at the age of 45, Foreman defeated 26-year-old Michael Moorer to claim the WBA, IBF, and lineal heavyweight championship titles. Following a single IBF title defense on June 28, 1995, Foreman gave up his title, the final major belt he ever held, and surrendered the WBA belt rather than face his required title defense. George Foreman became the oldest world heavyweight champion in history at the age of 46 years, 169 days.
