American actor Harvey Keitel was born on May 13, 1939. Harvey is renowned for his “tough guy” and ethically gray characters. Harvey first gained notoriety during the New Hollywood movement and has maintained a close relationship with Martin Scorsese for many years, appearing in six of his films since 1967.

Keitel studied at the HB Studio and under the tutelage of Lee Strasberg and Stella Adler before getting parts in a few Off-Broadway productions.

Keitel appeared in Martin Scorsese’s debut feature film, Who’s That Knocking at My Door, as “J.R.” after giving the director a test at this time (1967). Since then, Keitel and Scorsese have collaborated on a number of projects.

In Scorsese’s Mean Streets, which served as Robert De Niro’s breakthrough movie, Keitel played the lead part. After working with Scorsese once more on Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974), in which he played a malevolent supporting part, and Taxi Driver (1976), in which he co-starred with Robert De Niro, Keitel once more played the pimp to Jodie Foster’s character.

Between 1982 and 1993, Keitel was married to American actress Lorraine Bracco, but the union was strained by a protracted custody dispute over their daughter, Stella (born 1985).

In 2001, he wed Canadian actress Daphna Kastner. Keitel is a Romanian honorary citizen.
