Nearly 150 pieces for the guitar and lute were written by Duarte (many commissioned with funds provided by the Arts Council of Great Britain and other sources). Many have been commercially recorded and many have been published, some even more than once.
Additionally, he wrote a number of didactic pieces, including an introduction to harmony for guitarists, and made numerous arrangements (some of which were also recorded).
His music displays an incredibly diverse range of styles. The three-movement guitar piece English Suite, Op. 31 by Duarte, is influenced by Renaissance court lutenists such as John Dowland and John Johnson.
Dreams, Op. 91, a piece was written for the Amsterdam Guitar Trio, fluctuates between aleatory, atonal, and graphic styles while remaining within a traditional notated structure and allowing for spontaneous interaction between the musicians.
