Thanks to the influence of her older brother, Michael, and her mother, who swam for the University of New Mexico, Ledecky began swimming at the age of six.

Ledecky set the American and US Open records in the 500-yard freestyle twice during her high-school swimming career, as well as the national high-school record in the 200-yard freestyle twice.

Except the 100-meter breaststroke, Ledecky concluded her high school career as the Stone Ridge school record holder in every swimming event.

She trained with coach Yuri Suguiyama at the Nation’s Capital Swim Club (formerly the Curl Burke Swim Club) during the summer of 2012.

Many people were surprised by Suguiyama’s decision to coach at the University of California, Berkeley.

Throughout the 2016 Olympics, she continued to train with the Nation’s Capital Swim Club under coach Bruce Gemmell.

She swam with Palisades Swim Team in Cabin John, Maryland, throughout the summers previous to 2012.
