Leonard Rossiter was an English actor who lived from October 21, 1926, to October 5, 1984.

Although Leonard had a long career in theatre, it was his television comic performances as Rupert Rigsby in the ITV series Rising Damp from 1974 to 1978 and Reginald Perrin in the BBC’s The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin from 1976 to 1979 that brought him the most fame.

Rossiter was born on October 21, 1926, in Wavertree, Liverpool, the second child of John and Elizabeth (née Howell) Rossiter. Leonard’s father ran a barbershop in the neighbourhood where the family lived. Leonard received his education at Liverpool Collegiate School (1939–46).

Rossiter and his classmates were evacuated to Bangor, North Wales, when World War II broke out in September 1939, where he would spend the next 18 months. Leonard planned to study modern languages in college and eventually become a teacher, but his father was killed in the May Blitz air raid in 1941, delaying his plans.
