Ball is the second child of LaVar and Tina Ball, both of whom played basketball in college. LaVar competed for Washington State and Cal State Los Angeles. He is 6.66 feet (1.98 meters) tall.

When Ball was a student at Chino Hills High School in California, he and his brothers Lonzo and LaMelo—both well-known NBA guards—won a state title. He decided not to play collegiate basketball after receiving a suspension for shoplifting in China prior to the 2017–18 season and instead signed a three-star recruiting contract with UCLA.

Ball played basketball for Chino Hills High School in Chino Hills, California, for four years. He began playing sports with his older brother, Lonzo, as a freshman. Ball made it possible for Chino Hills to participate in the CIF Southern Section Open Division title game for the first time ever.

Ball was chosen by the Greensboro Swarm with the 14th overall choice in the NBA G League draft on October 23, 2021. He achieved a career high of 22 points in the G League. Ball and the Charlotte Hornets came to an agreement prior to the 2022 NBA Summer League. Ball and the Hornets came to an unguaranteed contract agreement on September 26, 2022. In 2022, on October 15th, he was liberated.
