In Odessa, Ukrainian SSR, Maksim was born to parents Larisa Chmerkovskiy and Aleksandr “Sasha” Chmerkovskiy. Although he claims to be Jewish, Maksim’s parents are both Christians.
When Maksim Chmerkovskiy was 4 years old, his parents enrolled him in an art education program, and that is when he started dancing. The school’s curriculum includes lessons in ballroom dancing and manners to assist children develop into young gentlemen or ladies.
On the second season of the American reality television program Dancing with the Stars, Maksim rose to prominence as a dancer. During his 17 seasons as a professional contestant in the competition, Chmerkovskiy made it to the final round five times, placing twice as runner-up and twice as third. On May 20, 2014, Chmerkovskiy won his first Dancing with the Stars title with Olympic ice dancer Meryl Davis. Chmerkovskiy played the lead in the Broadway productions Burn the Floor and Forever Tango.
