Marla Olmstead, who was born in Binghamton, New York in 2000, is an abstract painter who rose to international recognition with her paintings when she was four years old.
Marla Olmstead began painting in early 2002, shortly before her second birthday, after her father, Mark, handed her paint to keep her from disrupting him while he was working on his own painting. Mark only painted briefly after his father died, and he makes no claims to be an artist.
Her abstract paintings, which have been as large as five feet (1.52 m) square, have sold for tens of thousands of dollars. A 2005 60 Minutes II report on Olmstead led to her initial prominence and the accusations that the allegedly original works by Marla were actually co-authored by her father. This was further explored in the 2007 documentary My Kid Could Paint That.
Mark painted for a very short time after his father left, despite the fact that she makes no claims to be an artist in any way. Marla’s artwork was eventually on display in the neighbourhood coffee shop.
Soon after a client paid $253 for one of Marla’s paintings, a local gallery owner saw one of her creations and made the decision to stage an exhibition of her work. Her paintings started to sell often after that.
