Lewis spent the previous 16 seasons as the Cincinnati Bengals’ head coach in the National Football League (NFL). He originally became known while serving as the defensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens from 1996 to 2001.
Under his direction, the team’s defense allowed the fewest points ever in a 16-game season in 2000, and in Super Bowl XXXV, the Ravens won their first Super Bowl.
Lewis was chosen the Bengals’ head coach as a result of his accomplishments, which was a position he held from 2003 to 2018, he also worked as an analyst for the Alliance of American Football (AAF).
During Lewis’ time as head coach, the Bengals’ precarious situation significantly improved, and the team became a legitimate postseason contender.
The Bengals had a franchise-worst 2-14 record and had not had a winning season or postseason berth since 1990 when he was hired. Lewis broke both streaks by his third season and guided the Bengals to their first division title in 15 years.
He led the Bengals to a total of seven playoff berths, four division championships, and a franchise-best five straight postseason appearances from 2011 to 2015.
