He was the elder brother of two other rock musicians: Donnie Van Zant, the founding member and lead vocalist of 38 Special, and Johnny Van Zant, the current frontman of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Melody Van Zant and Tammy Van Zant both had him as a father.
Son of Marion Virginia (Hicks) and Lacy Austin (1915–2004) Van Zant, was born and reared in Jacksonville, Florida (1929-2000).
