She began her career as a news anchor for the local CBS television station at the age of 19, and in 1976 she was promoted to reporter and co-anchor for the ABC news affiliate in Baltimore, Maryland. Because she felt confined by the neutrality needed of news reporters, she co-hosted the Baltimore morning show Peaople Are Talking in 1977.
