Paul Nicholas Whelan, a Marine with citizenship in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Canada, was born on March 5, 1970, to British parents with Irish ancestry.

In the early 2000s, Whelan began working for Kelly Services as an IT project manager. Soon after, he joined the marines for the first of two tours in Iraq, in 2004 and again in 2006.

Paul joined the Marine Corps Reserve in 1994. While he was in the Marines, Whelan made his first trip to Russia, which he documented on his now-defunct website. When he shared photos from his trip, he said that he had a “very good time” seeing Moscow and St. Petersburg.

However, after rising to the rank of staff sergeant, he was kicked out of the marines in 2008 for inappropriate behavior.

On June 15, 2020, a court in Moscow found Paul Whelan guilty of spying and gave him a 16-year prison sentence.
