At the age of 52, Zacharias Mar Polycarpose Zacharias, previous Metropolitan of the Jacobite Syrian Church’s Malabar Diocese, died of a heart attack at St. Mary’s Hospital in Manarkad, Kerala. Puthenpalli is a member of the Kochillam family and a parishioner of Kottayam St. Mary’s.
Among the educational institutions on which he has served on the advisory board are St. Mary’s College, St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s English Medium and St. Paul’s English Medium School, and Aramia International Residential College.
The metropolitan’s mortal remains will be on display for public veneration at Mannarkkad St Mary’s Cathedral till 5 p.m. today. Following that, the body will be carried out in a procession to Kurichi St Mary’s Church for an evening prayer.
The mourning procession to St. Mary’s Church will begin after the evening prayer. On Wednesday at 3 p.m., His Holiness Basilios Thomas I, Catholicos Bava, will preside over the burial ritual.
