As a writer of speculative fiction, Rachel Pollack produced seven novels and four collections of short stories, including the novels Golden Vanity from the 1980s and Unquenchable Fire, winner of the 1989 Arthur C. Clarke Award for science fiction.

The Fissure King, Rachel Pollack’s most recent book, was published in 2017. Her first piece of published writing, the short story Pandora’s Bust, appeared in Michael Moorcock’s seminal new wave publication New Worlds in 1971, and she soon changed directions after that.

Beginning in the middle of the 1970s, Pollack lived in Amsterdam for almost ten years before returning to the United States after undergoing gender transition surgery.
