As a sister ship of Crown Princess and Emerald Princess, Fincantieri in Trieste, Italy, constructed the Ruby Princess in 2008. In late October 2008, she was given to Carnival Corporation and Princess Cruises. Trista and Ryan Sutter officially named her on November 6, 2008, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
As the origin of more than 10% of Australia’s initial COVID-19 cases, the ship gained notoriety in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. By the end of August, there had been 28 deaths and at least 900 infections reported as being connected to the ship. Additional incidents in New Zealand connected to the ship.
The Night Club on Ruby Princess was relocated directly aft of the funnel as opposed to being suspended over the stern as in the original Grand-class designs, continuing the modified Grand-class design.
