American music industry executive Marion Hugh “Suge” Knight Jr. co-founded Death Row Records and served as its CEO for a while.

He played a significant role in the gangsta rap genre’s commercial success. Dr. Dre’s The Chronic and Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle, the record label’s first two albums, are credited with this accomplishment.

Tupac Shakur began serving a four-and-a-half-year prison sentence in 1995. That October, Knight cut a deal with Shakur, paying his bail and releasing him from prison for an appeal of his conviction, while also signing him to Death Row Records.

All Eyez on Me, Shakur’s biggest commercial triumph, was released by the label in 1996. After leaving a Mike Tyson boxing bout in Las Vegas in September, a group led by Knight and Shakur assaulted Orlando Anderson, a Southside Compton Crips gang member.

Three hours later, someone shot into the car Knight was driving, killing Shakur.

Knight, 57, is now serving a 28-year jail sentence for the fatal event at Tam’s Burgers in Compton, California, in January that took the life of local businessman Terry Carter.
